Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It’s beyond me.  – Zora Neale Hurston

It’s Beyond Me

Better than blueberry pie
and frosty milk
Peach cobbler sweet
funnier than the time
that’s not funny
but the face she makes
the way she tells it
makes you laugh
until you don’t care
the details curiously certain
Watch her dance in tongues
dervish into transcendental
not knowing whether
to follow her fingertips
or her hem
It’s beyond me
why color
would deny
the pleasure
of her company
